They used to work fine but in today’s brute force attacks, they are quite useless for malware now tries one tactic and then shifts to another if it is blocked at one front.

Malware has evolved as much as the technology that it attacks and a mere blocking of attacks on one front is futile. Many computers are even infected without the user knowing it leaving them with propagation points for other attacks.

They used to be simple plug and play appliances that allows us to expand or improve out ability to connect to the internet but hackers have found of ways to use these gadgets as tools in their never ending quest for things to attack.

Infected routers have been found all over the world showing the complexity level at which these hackers operate. Firewalling them allows them to stop attacks even before they happen. Have old hardware, then a simple firmware upgrade may be in order to allow them ample protection. New ones have them built in so not much needs to be done except for frequent checks with the manufacturer’s website for firmware upgrades.

Anti-virus software prevents hacking software from hiding in these normally sublime hardware that can be portable thus mobile taking it’s payload with it where ever you attach them.

Most software scans and monitors these gadgets for any infections but even when installing new storage devices such as hard drives and NAT’s it would be best to scan them from the start. It also allows the anti-virus software to recognize any built-in software that may come with the drives to monitor them effectively. Frequent updates to the anti-virus’s database and engine may also be necessary as well as updates to software that allows these attached hardware to function to keep you safe online each and every time you connect to the internet.

I wanted to get one of those media tanks as well – these gadgets where you can load video files and play them on your TV. But I discovered that you can download PS3 Media Server, turn on the Media Server function of the PS3 and my PC can now stream video and audio files directly to the PS3.

At first I couldn’t make it work, I tried everything but my PS3 just couldn’t detect my PC. Then I realized that even though I gave permission for the server in the Windows Firewall, what I really needed to do was to turn off the firewall completely, which allowed the PS3 to detect it. Then I just turned it back on. It’s a simple solution and it works.

The term “Dumb Firewall” is a term to describe a firewall program that has very little intelligence, hence its name. It’s primary function is to simply block ALL Internet connections by default. Some of these may ask you whether you trust a program before it will allow inbound or outbound connections to your computer. Users that choose not to trust the program may find that their Internet program cut off already. On the other hand, if they choose to trust the ‘WRONG’ program, they may be allowing hackers into their computer without ANY future warnings from the Dumb Firewall.

This product is somewhat expensive but it is always worth all the bucks you shell out. McAffee Personal Firewall Plus is being sold in a yearly subscription basis rather than the one-time purchase. This kind of purchase may appeal to some buyers. Also, there is no existing free trial version for this product.
Comparatively, this firewall software have a small footprint, which means it only requires low memory usage. However, McAfee for Windows ICS and IIS networks and web servers are not supported.

Now that you have a fairly good background about the top personal firewall software, it is now your responsibility to review and choose one to use for your home network protection.

Then don’t forget to take a look at SharePoint Health Analyzer. SharePoint Health Analyzer is a feature in SharePoint Server 2010 and SharePoint Foundation 2010 that allows administrators to schedule regular, automatic checks for potential configuration, performance, and usage problems in the server farm. Any errors that SharePoint Health Analyzer finds are identified in status reports that are made available to farm administrators in Central Administration. Status reports that are produced by SharePoint Health Analyzer explain each issue, list the servers where the problem exists, and outline the steps that an administrator can take to treat the problem. In some cases, errors are repaired automatically as soon as they are found, and farm administrators are informed of the repairs.

The Health analyzer in SharePoint Server 2010 has a swath of rule definitions that it monitors. It raises a warning if a performance indicator exceeds the limits set by the rules.

1. Title: It seems that Microsoft has provided useful and informative names for the default rules.
2. Scope: This field has two options: All Servers and Any Server. This is useful in a farm environment. It allows you to choose if the rule needs to be run on every SharePoint server in a farm, or on just one server. You’ll probably want to run computer-specific rules on all servers, but just run SharePoint-specific rules on any server (to reduce performance impact).
3. Schedule: Each rule can be scheduled to execute hourly, daily, weekly, monthly or OnDemandOnly (manual).
4. Enabled: This checkbox allows you to temporarily disable a rule without deleting its definition. I wouldn’t delete any existing rules; just disable them instead.
5. Repair Automatically: You can ask SharePoint to automatically try to repair an error.
6. Version: It seems that you can version your rules. This field is a textbox in the Beta release.
The SharePoint Central Administration home page alerts you when a rule’s been breached.

Health Reports
When a health rule executes, SharePoint Health Analyzer creates a status report and adds it to the Health Analyzer Reports list in the Monitoring section of Central Administration. The default view of this list displays only items that have failed the most recent health check. You can review the archived reports by clicking Review problems and solutions under Health Analyzer in the Monitoring section of Central Administration.

You can access the Health Reports list programmatically through the static Local property of the SPHealthReportsList class, a subclass of SPList. After you have an instance of the SPHealthReportsList class, you can query the list as you would any SPList object.

Remember that the SharePoint family of products such as SharePoint Server 2010, SharePoint Foundation 2010, Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and associated free SharePoint templates have a lot to offer.

Securing the computer system has become the primary focus for both the individual and corporate users alike.

Internet security can essentially be broken down to three areas of concern, antivirus utilities, firewall protection and recommended practices (common sense). It is important that all of these three aspects be in place in your computer system to provide you adequate protection. Understanding the events that can lead to a compromised security is a necessity in computer protection.
